Long Underwear

Mens Long Underwear Shopping Tips

As many people know, layering is key when it comes to snowboarding. The first layer is called the base layer, and usually consists of a pair of long underwear. Typically this long underwear comes in three different styles, tops, bottoms, and (although more rare) one pieces. All three kinds tend to be longer, cutting off at the ankle or wrist to ensure maximum protection and warmth while you snowboard.

Insulation and Weight

There are two main components of long underwear, insulation and moisture wicking abilities. When it comes to insulation, you have three basic choices, either lightweight, mid weight or heavy weight. Obviously, lightweight long underwear will be the thinnest, allowing for more breathability. If you tend to get warm easy or will be riding in warmer conditions, lightweight long underwear may be the right choice for you. Mid weight long underwear is a good choice for all around weather, it is heavier than lightweight long underwear but wont bake you when it gets a bit warmer outside or when you start to work up a sweat. Heavy weight long underwear is the warmest and thickest of all. This type of long underwear should be worn in the coldest of conditions, or if you’re the type of person that gets cold quickly while snowboarding.

Moisture Wicking Properties

The other important factor when picking your long underwear is its ability to wick away moisture. It’s very common for snowboarders to work up a sweat while riding. In order to stay dry and comfortable, you will need your base layer to move that moisture away from your body. Long underwear performs this task very well and can be made from a number of different fabrics to do so, like wool, synthetics, silk and combinations of fabrics. All these fabrics have various pros and cons to them, and depending on what you’re looking for in your long underwear will determine which one is right for you. The one fabric to stay away from here is cotton. Cotton does not wick away moisture and will become wet and heavy during your day of shredding, making you colder and less comfortable.
